Short Title CEN: 1790 SC York
    Source ID S37
Text The First Federal Census of 1790 (effective date of 2 August 1790) states the name of the head of household only, with columns for ennumerating members of the household by sex, age, and race.

    Household of James Darwin (2.05)

Head of HouseholdA: Free White Males 16+B: Free White Males Under 16C: Free White FemalesD: Other Free PersonsE: Slaves
    Jas. Dervin32600

James' entry does not precisely match other sources. We are reasonably certain his household at the time consisted of himself, aged 46, wife Mary (44), sons William Washington (21), George Cowan (19), John M. (9), James W. (3) and daughters Jane (17), Anne (14), Sarah (10), and Margaret (5). This gives a count of 1 less female than included in the census return. Assuming the birth dates we have for James' two other known daughters are accurate (1794 for Jerusha Jane, circa 1795 for Nancy) and therefore neither had been born at the time of the 1790 census, there is a possibility there was an additional daughter who died in infancy. This seems even more likely when considering the 1800 Census for this same household, which also displays an unknown female in the age range of 11-16.

    [A]: James, 46
    [A]: William Washington, 21
    [A]: George Cowan, 19
    [B]: John M., 9
    [B]: James W., 3
    [C]: Mary (Cowan), 44
    [C]: Jane, 17
    [C]: Anne, 14
    [C]: Sarah, 10
    [C]: Margaret, 5
    [C]: unknown female

    Household of John Darwin (2.08)

Head of HouseholdA: Free White Males 16+B: Free White Males Under 16C: Free White FemalesD: Other Free PersonsE: Slaves
    John Dervin11400

John Darwin's entry, which also does not quite match other sources, may be expanded as follows:

    [A]: John, 35
    [B]: William, 4
    [C]: Jane (Bland), 28
    [C]: Nancy, 6
    [C]: Mary, 5
    [C]: Rebecca, 2

We would expect John's daughter Rachel, born 10 April 1790, to be included. Her absence here may be explained by the delay in compiling the census returns (not submitted until May 1791).
