| Notes |
John Granville Darwin was born 1818 in Jackson Co., TN, and moved with his parent's family about 1829 to Morgan Co., AL, where they remained six years and then to Randolph Co., Illinois.
I do not have John's marriage record to Euphemia Smith but I assume that they were married in Randolph County around 1838 because their first child, Mary, was born there in 1838 and she was followed by a brother and four more sisters.
The 1850 and 1860 IL census records would indicate that Euphemia died some time after 1850 and John remarried about 1853, Elizabeth Burns, and to this union there were a daughter and four sons.
I've only received correspondence from one person in John's group and that was Bertha B. Darwin of Oklahoma City who was married to one of the sons of Clinton Witherly Darwin. Bertha informed me that both John and his wife were murdered during the Civil War but I have seen a subsequent report from Sherri Goodman that his wife's deaths occurred in the aftermath of the war in 1865 but I have no details of the event as to whether this was a war related feud or whether John and Elizabeth were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The 1870 IL census for Randolph County shows their son Clinton Darwin, age 16, working as a labourer on the farm of Absalom Pearson while two of his younger brothers, Henry and John, were living at the neighbouring farm of Benjamin Rickets.
