    Notes
    • Commentary: DWD 4.172

Robert Russell Darwin became a Physician and it is possible that he was influenced in deciding to study medicine because his brother-in-law, James A. Smith, who was married to Sarah R. Darwin, was practicing as a Physician.

The 1850 SC census shows Robert, at the age of 17, listed as a student living in the household of James and Sarah Smith in York County. Robert later qualified as a Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of South Carolina and the University of Virginia and by 1860, the census shows that he was practicing his profession in York County, now married to Martha Elizabeth Whitesides along with their first child, Ada Isabella, who was about one year old.

      * Rev. Jerry L. West has made the suggestion he may have been named after Rev. Robert Y. Russell, a prominent (and controversial) Independent Presbyterian active in York District at the time, follower of Rev. William C. Davis (whose surname might also be the source for Robert R. Darwin's younger brother Elnathan's middle name). See Rev. J.L.West's monograph, The Life and Controversy of Reverend William Cummins Davis.

      * According to alumni office letter of J.R.Harris (dated 23 October 1965), Robert studied at the Medical College of South Carolina and the University of Virginia after study at Davidson College in North Carolina.

      * At the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, in Charleston SC, his Preceptor was "A. White", to whom he submitted his thesis, An Inaugual Dissertation on Scarlatina, Respectfully Submitted to the Dean & Faculty of the Medical College of the State of South Carolina For the Degree of M.D. By R.R.Darwin of York District S.C., Feb. 1st 1857
