Susan B. Darwin was born 10 Apr. 1860 in Stevenson, Jackson Co., AL, where she is listed with her parents, George and Frances Darwin, on the 1860 census living in the household of Sevier Boulton, who was Frances' father. At the time George W. Darwin was 31 years old and listed as a school teacher in Stevenson.

As I was unable to find him on the 1870 census, I'm not certain at what date the family left Alabama to settle in Franklin Co., TN, though it may have been before 1863 since most census records for his son, James Peyton Darwin, born 3 Dec. 1863, list him born in Tennessee. The likelihood is that they had left Stevenson well before that date since at the height of the Civil War, General Rosecran directed his offensive from Murfreesboro across Middle Tennessee to Stevenson, AL, which he reached on 20 Aug. 1863.

It was probably after the war that George W. Darwin exchanged his teaching career and became a Methodist Minister Circuit Rider in Tennessee and was away from home so much that the family left him and moved to Texas. There is a divorce record for Susan's parents, George and Frances, that is dated January 1873 in Franklin Co., TN, which is the last reference that I have for the family in Tennessee, and Susan shows her second son, Luther Hodges, born July 1879 in Texas on the 1900 census for Robertson County, which would suggest that the family migrated in the mid 1870s to Texas, where Susan married George Hodges about 1876. They are both buried along with their two eldest sons in the Bald Prairie Cemetery, which is located about twenty miles north of Franklin in Robertson Co., TX.
